The history of the Platinum Eagle coin

The 1/4 oz Platinum American Eagle coin, minted from 1997 to 2008, offers a peek into American history with its beautifully detailed design of Lady Liberty. The Proof Platinum Eagle coins are the only U.S. bullion coin that changes reverse designs each year. Burnished Platinum coins in the Foundations of Democracy series celebrating the three branches of government were made in 2006, 2007 and 2008 especially for coin collectors, creating a new opportunity as the Platinum American Eagle coin has been primarily sold for investments. The U.S. Mint continues to make 1 oz coins with one of the world’s favorite Precious Metals for investment purposes.

Why invest in Platinum Eagle coins?

The 1/4 oz Platinum American Eagle coin has a face value of $25 as a proof of its authenticity as a U.S. Mint product but that is little reflection of its actual value. The Platinum Eagle coin is America’s first and only official Platinum bullion coin, guaranteed to be .9995 fine Platinum and to contain 1/4 troy ounce of Platinum. Platinum coins are made specifically for investors in Platinum bullion.

Celebrate American prosperity with 1/4 oz Platinum American Eagle coins.

The 1/4 oz Platinum American Eagles, along with the 1/10 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz Platinum Eagles, were first issued in 1997, following in the footsteps of the popular American Eagle Silver coins and American Eagle Gold coins, both introduced the year prior. The standard Platinum Eagle coin features the face of the Statue of Liberty on the obverse and the iconic eagle on the reverse. Proof Platinum coins include a variety of American designs on the reverse in the Vistas of Liberty series, the Foundations of Democracy series and a series based on the U.S. Constitution. These popular U.S. Mint coins are seen by collectors as a way to own a bit of American history that you can hold in your hands, and investors see these Platinum coins as an ideal way to invest for the future.

Quarter Ounce Platinum

By  Mike

What drew me to this coin was that it had more detail than it's little 1/10th oz cousin. I went with the random year since it's cheaper (plus an added surprise) to go with a random year instead of choosing a specific date. I've added in "Collectible (lower mintage)" since so far, there's not that many of this size coin left in the store and the US Mint doesn't make any of the fractional sizes anymore.

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)

Great coin!

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)

Beautiful coins. I like fractional platinum and gold coins, and I try to pick one of these up whenever the platinum spot price falls below gold...

Great coin. I received a 2003 BU coin. The 1997-2003 coins with the reflective highlights are more stunning than the more recent matte versions.
