1978 Mexico 1 oz Silver Onza Balance Scale (AU or Better)

1978 Mexico 1 oz Silver Onza Balance Scale (AU or Better)

Only 280,000 were struck in 1978. Each Onza is a full ounce of silver. These are not seen nearly as often as their 1979 & 1980 dated counterparts.

Solid Heft and Simple Historical Design

The Onza Balance Scale silver coin was one of the first modern bullion coins. Unlike current silver bullion, which is usually .999+ pure, the Onza was made of sterling silver (.925 pure), but with a total of 33.625 grams, so you have a full troy ounce of silver. That gives the Onza a bit more heft than the current bullion. I've heard good and bad--some folks want only pure silver, but after holding an Onza, I think most folks are impressed and will change their mind! I love the simple design--taken all together, this coin loudly proclaims "I am a big hunk of silver--and if you put me in your safety deposit box, you have that much less to worry about come the Zombiepocolypse!"

Pros

  • Collectible (lower mintage)
