Beginning in the 8th century, Vikings voyaged from Scandinavia across an area stretching from North America to the Black Sea. Using their famous longships to plunder and later colonize many costal areas, they were fierce raiders.

Vikings wore woollen shirts and long cloth trousers with leather hobnailed boots. In battle they wore iron helmets, which in contrast to popular belief did not have horns. Wealthy Viking warriors could also afford a chain mail shirt, which would have been extremely labor-intensive to make.
