The American Gold Buffalo pays homage to one of the most iconic coins in American history. First minted in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo was the first 1 oz Gold coin struck by the United States Mint containing .9999 fine Gold. The coin was created to compete with other pure Gold bullion coins on the market like the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf and the Mexican Gold Libertad, and saw immediate success. All American Gold Buffalos contain 1 oz of .9999 fine Gold; however, fractional sizes of this Gold bullion coin were minted in 2008 and this one year of production makes them highly collectible.

The design of this Gold bullion coin is based on James Earle Fraser’s iconic and wildly popular 1913 Buffalo Nickel. The obverse of the coin depicts the profile of a Native American man who was modeled after three different chiefs from Native American tribes: Lakota chief Iron Tail, Cheyenne chief Two Moons and Seneca chief John Big Tree. The reverse of the coin features the classic buffalo designed after Black Diamond, a 1,550-pound bison that lived in New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s.

American Gold Buffalos are struck at the West Point Mint in New York. Known as the “Fort Knox of Silver”, the West Point Mint produces all American Eagle coins in Gold, Silver and Platinum as well as all Gold and some Silver commemorative coins.

Intriguing Details Give Gold Buffalo Coins Historic Interest

The history of this Gold Buffalo coin design dates to 1913, when American sculptor James Earle Fraser created his iconic image of a Native American. The stunning profile of the Native American chief visible on the PCGS MS-70 Gold Buffalo coin first appeared on the obverse of the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. The U.S. Mint struck this copper-nickel five-cent piece between 1913 and 1938.

The reverse of the MS-70 Gold Buffalo Nickel features an American buffalo, just as the original Buffalo Nickel did. Fraser stated that he modeled the animal in his design after the Central Park Zoo's Black Diamond, though some of his statements suggest that he used a bison at the Bronx Zoo for his model.

Although the design of this coin mimics the Buffalo Nickel, other elements of the MS-70 Gold Buffalo coin differ greatly. This tribute coin is minted from the highest-purity .9999 fine Gold. U.S. Mint Gold has a distinguished history of providing value to investors and collectors alike, making this Buffalo Gold a wise purchase regardless of whether you are beginning your collection and want an iconic piece to serve as its foundation or are interested in adding the Gold Buffalo tribute to your existing selection of U.S. coinage.

Although the original Buffalo Nickel has since been discontinued, this stunning Gold Buffalo tribute coin offers a prime opportunity to add a newer version of Fraser’s timeless design to your collection. You can appreciate both the intricacy of the minted Native American chief and majestic buffalo and the outstanding purity level of the Gold Buffalo, verified by PCGS grading standards. Don't miss the opportunity to add a Buffalo Gold Coin to your portfolio.
