Striking Silver commemorative!
Issued by the British Virgin Islands to comemmorate Danish-born explorer Vitus J. Bering. In 1728, while in the service of Czar Peter I of Russia, it was Bering who discovered that Siberian Russia and America were not connected by land, and several geographic locales were named for him.
This set was struck by the Pobjoy Mint, with each coin containing just over 28 grams of Sterling Silver. The Silver content of this set is 1.75 ounces.
Each coin has the usual likeness of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The reverse of one of the coins shows one of Bering's ships heading toward a gilded sunset. The other coin has a likeness of Bering and a ship below a gilded St. Peter Monument. The set comes in a handsome case with certificate of authenticity.
