1 oz Silver Round - U.S. Assay Office

1 oz Silver Round - U.S. Assay Office

In the late 1960s, the Defense Logistics Agency had over 165 million ounces of Silver in its stockpile. The government dumped the Silver into the open market in 1980 and 1981 to drive down Silver prices after the Hunt brothers tried to corner the market.

Round Highlights:

  • Contains 1 oz of .999 fine Silver.
  • Individual rounds come in protective plastic.
  • Obverse: Features the American Flag and an Eagle within a wreath along with the weight and purity.
  • Reverse: Displays the words, “Minted From U.S. Strategic Stockpile Silver” and “Formerly Stored at U.S. Assay Office in San Francisco.”
  • Secondary Market Silver could be perfect, scruffy or somewhere in between.

Protect your rounds from fingerprints by adding these cotton gloves to your order.

These rounds are all dated 1981, these rounds are over 30 years old and so it is expected that these may have some tarnishing, dings, and scratches. Own a piece of history by adding this 1 oz Silver round to your cart today!

More than one Version!

More than One Version! I love these Historic Rounds that were dumped on the Market due to the Hunt Brothers attempt to corner the Silver Market in the very early 80's. I've noticed that there are at least two versions of this Round in existence! One Has a fierce looking Single Breasted Eagle seemingly about to grab something with his talons. This version is what you see on Apmex's website. The Second Version has a weak rendering of a double breasted Eagle that doesn't seem very fierce as it seems to come in for a landing. I wonder which version is older.

Pros

  • Easy to Sell
  • Mint Condition
  • Historic Collectible
  • Recognized Brand
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
  • Attractive Design

DBossMoney reveals APMEX as the Best

Not only is it a piece of history. Unless you just don't care about service, you can't buy these anywhere else. Reputation counts. If you were buying underwear, a robe, etc. then the point is. moot. You're buying sound Money!! Numismatic value isn't the topic of discussion here. Although that is also present. This is the only US made and GOVT produced SILVER ROUND I have ever seen. If you know another US MINT GOVT produced SILVER ROUND, let everyone know. Most of all, let me know, I will buy them.

A unique piece of American history, and am glad to have finally been able to buy this piece. However, I bought the 40mm air tight to put the round in also, based on the listed diameter, and the black ring on that particular air tight does not cover all of the edges of the round. 39mm is the way to go with this round IMO.

A very exciting round.....fun to know where the silver had been stored..........probably for decades before being made into these cool rounds. Thank you APMEX for making these unique, historical products available at affordable prices on your awesome website.
