Product Description

Mintage only 5,000 coins!
First release in the Wildlife in Need five-coin series.
This coin features an adult Giant Panda and cub in color, against a backdrop of a bamboo forest and a mountain. Also, the lower reverse comprises a struck design showing a pair of supporting hands with a bamboo motif, design by Karen Hull. The inscription WILDLIFE IN NEED – GIANT PANDA is incorporated into the design. The Raphael Maklouf likeness of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination are shown on the obverse.
This peaceful, bamboo-eating member of the bear family is native to China. It is easily recognized by the large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. Known for its solitary nature, the Giant Panda has an acute sense of smell and can grow up to five feet in height. The lifespan of this bear in the wild has not been confirmed but the oldest captive animal lived to 37 years of age.
Giant Panda have steadily lost their forest habitat to China’s expanding human population. These striking animals are now confined to fragmented forest patches high in the mountains of south western China. These same mountains form the watershed for the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, whose basin are the economic heart of China and home to more than 500 million people.
As China’s economy continues its rapid development, it is more important than ever to conserve the forest home of the Giant Panda- not just to safeguard this well-loved species, but to maintain the subsistence fisheries, agriculture, and water resources essential for the region.
The Giant Panda is listed as endangered and although estimations vary, it is thought that there are as 1,500 of these amazing creatures left in the wild.
