This set contains the 14th, 15th and 16th coins in the Biblical Art series from the Holy Land Mint. The three beautiful coins in this set are the 2009 Samson and the Lion coin (No longer available from the Mint and did not reach the full mintage of 2,800), the 2010 Jonah in the Whale (Sold out at the Mint) coin which is the 2012 winner for Coin of the Year, and the 2011 Elijah in the Whirlwind coin. These 2 NIS Proof coins contain .857 oz of .925-fine Silver for a total Silver weight of 2.57 oz. They have a limited mintage of 2,800 coins each and come together in a mint-issued box with the certificate of authenticity.
Each coin portrays an image that alludes to a unique Biblical story that is iconic in its own right. Samson was a legendary person of character, who refrained from worldly pleasures and was notorious for having long hair. On his way to meet a girl he wanted to marry, he was confronted with an attacking lion. However, his superhuman strength enabled him to conquer the beast.
Jonah found himself in the belly of the whale after deciding to flee from his divine mission of warning the people of Nineveh of their evil ways. He instead departed on a ship, where a violent storm threatened the lives of everyone on board and resulted in Jonah being cast into the sea after admitting his guilt. After being swallowed by the whale, he eventually was spat back out onto the shore and resumed his original divine pursuit.
Elijah the Prophet, about whom we are told in the Book of Kings I and II, is seen ascending to heaven in the whirlwind in a chariot of fire drawn by horses of fire. This is one of the most famous Biblical scenes, which has been an inspiration for artists throughout the ages.
