The obverse side shows the National Shield, surrounded by the leyend “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” (United Mexican States) and on the edge the words: “Independencia y Libertad” (Independence and Freedom). At the right field, the facade and towers of the Parroquia de Dolores, the parish church where Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla uttered his famous "Grito de Dolores" (the call for the Mexican War of Independence) in the early morning hours of September 16, 1810, by ringing the now called Independence Bell, which is in the upper left field.
