This 1/2 oz, .9999 fine Silver $4 coin was designed by Canadian artist Kerri Burnett. The image of a fossilized Euoplocephalus skeleton accentuates the heavily armored spikes of this tough looking prehistoric creature. A selective finish has been applied to the reverse of the coin to give its design an aged, fossil-like appearance. In fact, this technique ensures no two coins are exactly alike. The design was developed in close collaboration with paleontologists at Alberta’s Royal Tyrell Museum. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, created by artist Susanna Blunt.
The entire head and body of the Euoplocephalus were covered with bands of armor, which allowed a surprising amount of flexibility. It was the first ankylosaurid (armored dinosaur) discovered with armored shutters that it could slide down to cover its eyelids! Each piece of armor was composed of a thick oval plate, embedded in the thick surrounding skin, which was studded with short spikes (dermal scutes, like those of crocodiles), which were about 4 to 6 inches long. In addition to the spines running down its back, Euoplocephalus had large horns growing from the back of its head. It also had a bony club at the end of its rigid tail. The tail was muscular so the club could be swung from side to side for defense. The stiff, low-slung dinosaur had poor teeth, so it probably would have grazed on fleshy low-lying vegetation.
