In 2008, we celebrate the Year of the Rat. According to tradition, people born during a Year of the Rat are said to exhibit that animal’s attributes. They are leaders, pioneers and conquerors, with charisma and passion, as well as being hardworking and practical. Some might call them crafty and thrifty, but they are generous to a fault with relatives. This is the eleventh coin in the silver hologram lunar zodiac series that began in 1998.
The obverse of this coin features a Chinese style rat, set in an octagon-shaped gold cameo. This is surrounded by all twelve of the Chinese lunar zodiac animals. All of these superb designs are the work of noted Chinese-Canadian artist Harvey Chan. On the reverse, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, in a crowned profile facing right by the artist Dora de Pédery-Hunt. The coin is encapsulated inside an exquisite red velvet, clamshell-style presentation case, with gold moiré sides, and protected by a red outer box. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
