Lucretia Rudolph Garfield was the wife of James Garfield, the twentieth President of the United States. Her time was brief in the White House. She became ill shortly after becomming First Lady and was sent to a seaside in New Jersey to recuperate from malaria. While she was away her husband, James Garfield was shot. She returned to the White House and for two months helped attend to her husband. She returned to her family farm in Ohio after Garfields death and remained there for the next 35 years of her life.
