4th Coin in the "UNESCO World Heritage Sites" Series
Megiddo was a site of great importance in the ancient world. It guarded the western branch of a narrow pass and trade route connecting Egypt and Assyria. Because of its strategic location, Megiddo was the site of several historical battles. The site was inhabited from approximately 7000 BC to 586 BC (the same time as the destruction of the First Israelite Temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonians, and subsequent fall of Israelite rule and exile), though the first significant remains date to the Chalcolithic period (4500-3500 BC). Needing secure access to its water supply, Megiddo utilized different watersystems over its history. In the 9th c. BC, Ahab constructed a massive system with a 30 meter deep shaft and a 70 meter long tunnel. This continued in use until the end of the Iron Age. This Iron Age tunnel connected the bottom of Ahab's shaft to the spring. Before its construction, Megiddo residents had to leave the city walls in order to get water from the spring. This tunnel was hewn from both ends at the same time (like Hezekiah's Tunnel) and its builders were only one foot off when meeting in the middle.
This .428 oz, .925-fine Silver Proof-Like coin depicts the tunnel of the water system at Megiddo, a jug found in an archeological dig at Megiddo, "Tel Megiddo" in English, Hebrew and Arabic, UNESCO World Heritage Site Emblem and the Israel UNESCO Emblem. This beautiful coin has a limited mintage of 1,800 and comes in the original box with a certificate of authenticity.
