The history of the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle

The Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle was a challenge to bring to life due to its intricate design and President Roosevelt’s recommendation that the coin be produced in high-relief. After these Gold Double Eagle coins went to low-relief, there were still a number of changes to make, including one beyond the designer’s or the mint’s control: New Mexico and Arizona became states in 1912 and the number of stars along the rim had to be changed to reflect this. The obverse design of this collectible Gold Eagle was brought back to life in 1986, featured on the American Eagle Gold bullion coins released in 1986. These U.S. Mint Gold coins (the first 1907 Double Eagles and the American Eagle Gold bullion coins issued from 1986 to 1991), are the only American coins to feature the year in Roman numerals.

These Gold Double Eagle coins have been guaranteed by PCGS, a leading coin grading service, to be of a gem brilliant mint state-65 condition, further enhancing the cachet of this iconic Gold coin. When you buy collectible Gold coins, protect the value of your collection.

When you purchase collectible Gold Eagle coins, and other vintage coins, there are steps you can take to maintain the value of your collection and keep the Gold coins safe and protected. First, it is important to keep your U.S. Mint Gold coins cool and dry, avoiding drastic changes in temperature and moisture that can tarnish and decrease the value of your coins. Paper gold & silver are down but, as you've noticed, with the current premiums over spot everywhere, bullion isn't down nearly as much as paper spot. As for these $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle - MS-65 PCGS I bought when gold was $1,500 per oz. and today with spot gold at $1,350 these coins still sell for more than I paid for them.... not to mention they are beautiful. Could it be that people are expressing their distrust in paper gold & silver? Are investors moving out of paper into the real thing?

Tools needed to take your collection of Gold coins to the next level.

If you have purchased collectible Gold Eagle coins and have been bitten by the collector bug and want to take your collection to the next level, there are some basic tools of the trade you will need. Collectors of Gold Double Eagle coins and other vintage coins usually have a quality magnifying glass to examine the coin’s details. Another helpful tool for collectors of the Gold Double Eagle and other collectible Precious Metals coins is a padded jeweler’s tray (a towel or soft cloth will work, too) to place the coins on when viewing and soft cotton gloves. A reference guide, featuring U.S. Mint Gold coins and other vintage coins, with information about dates, mint marks, varieties, grading guidelines and prices.
