New Zealand Mint is proud to announce this coin issue celebrating the first man in space as part of the Conquest of Space series. Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human being to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed a single orbit of the Earth on April 12, 1961.

With permission from Alexei Leonov presented on this coin in magnificent color is a reproduction of his original painting that illustrated this historic achievement. Engraved in 3D relief is the space ship Vostok 1 which Yuri Gagarin used to orbit the earth. The coin is presented in a fold out picture with box and certificate of authenticity.
