Only 11,250 minted of this scarce coin! 1907 is the first year of issue of one of the most popular coins in the history of American coinage. This $20 Double Eagle is graded VF-35 by PCGS. Pre-33 Gold has always been popular with collectors and will remain a conversation piece for years to come. The high relief is special because it is how Augustus Saint Gaudens originally had designed the coin before the high relief was scrapped due to striking difficulties, among other things. The high relief remains as one of the few pinnacle pieces of all Pre-33 gold as it is considered by many to be the most beautiful U.S. coin ever produced. There are two varieties. The wire rim is a result of a small gap between the collar and the dies. Later in production, the Mint elimated this characteristic which resulted in the flat rim. After Saint Gaudens passed away in August of 1907, then Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber made two major modifications which inclueded lowering its relief and changing the roman numerals to arabic numerals, which were are all accustomed to seeing today on all of our coinage.
