This Gold Zecchino (Ducat) was issued by the Republic of Venice when it was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. As an important center of commerce, Venetian coins were widely used and valued throughout Europe, North Africa, and Asia.
This particular coin was minted between 1659 and 1674 at the Venice mint and contains .1122 oz actual Gold weight. The obverse features Christ standing, and the reverse shows the Doge (Domenico II Contarini) kneeling. This example is graded Extra Fine 45 by NGC. Listed in Krause as FM#1332.
