Product Description
Graded Gold commem!
These Gold commemorative coins were struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's signing the acquisition of the Louisiana Territory. This 1903 $1.00 Gold commemorative is graded MS-62 by NGC.
These coins were originally issued for $3.00 each and were packaged in a variety of different ways including cardboard boxes with imprinted lids, spoons and stick pins. This coin was designed Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint famous for his coin designs.
There were two different coins struck to commemorate the Louisiana Purchase: one depicting Thomas Jefferson to honor the acquisition, and one depicting William McKinley, who was responsible for the Exposition. These coins are a rare find with an original mintage of only 17,500, and many of them were even returned to the mint where they were then melted.
