The second $5 gold coin in the Royal Canadian Mint’s exciting new "O Canada" series focusing on iconic Canadian images, this beautiful coin celebrates the rich history and symbolism associated with the Canadian polar bear. This 5-Dollar coin is certified to be 99.99% pure gold with a diameter of 16 millimetres. The reverse design by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc features a detailed portrait of a polar bear. Viewed in profile from its right side, the polar bear’s face fills the central field. Canadian artist Pierre Leduc presents the engraved full face portrait of a polar bear against the background of a frozen, wind-swept, snow-crusted environment stretching out to the horizon. The artist’s image details to stunning effect the polar bear’s small ears, fur-ringed eyes and thick fur. Its distinctive black nose and eyes stand out in sharp contrast to its shaggy light-coloured body. Framing the reverse image is an outer band featuring the word “CANADA,” the date “2013,” and the face value of “5 DOLLARS,” as well as a small stylized polar bear paw print symbol. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
