Product Description

Historic French Silver recovered from SS New York! When the steamship SS New York sank in foul weather off Galveston, Texas in 1846, it was largely ignored in the U.S. due to the Mexican War that was then raging. After the wreck was located and the coins successfully recovered, over 160 years had passed. When most collectors hear SS New York, they tend to think first of the U.S. gold and silver coins on board. There were however, coins from other countries (foreign coins circulated widely in the US until the Mint Act of 1857 removed their legal tender status) recovered in the wreck.

We present one of those here. This is a French 5 Franc coin from 1829. The silver content of this issue is .7234 of an ounce. This issue of King Charles X was struck at the Lyon Mint. It has been certified by NGC has having Shipwreck Effect from the SS New York. KM#728.4.
