This Gold Stater (8.59 gm) was struck sometime during the reign of Philip III, half-brother of Alexander the Great, and his immediate succesor as king of Macedonia from 323-317 BC. The obverse shows the helmeted head of Athena, goddess of wisdom and warfare, while the reverse features Nike, winged goddess of victory.
