Product Description

More than 2,400 years old! One of the oldest coins available!
The Persian daric was introduced by Darius the Great of Persia (aka the Achaemenid Empire) between 522 BC and 486 BC. Only the 6th century BC coins of Lydia are older!
These Darics were widely used until the invasion of the Macedonians led by Alexander the Great in 330 BC. Upon invasion, many darics were melted down and recoined as coins of Alexander, which makes Persian darics quite rare!

This example weighs almost 8.3 grams and since these coins are over 95% pure, their actual gold content is more than 0.25 of an ounce!
The obverse shows a kneeling king holding a bow and spear. The reverse has an oblong incuse punch. This example has been graded Very Fine by NGC with a strike rating of 3/5 and a surface rating of 3/5! A truly amazing coin for being almost 2,500 years old! Adding to its collector appeal is the fact that this is one of the oldest gold coins ever made!
