The Perth Mint has done it again! This meticulously struck coin honors the island nation of Tuvalu. A string of coral islands, Tuvalu is located between Hawaii and Australia near Fiji. Tuvalu is the home of approximately 10,000 happy-go-lucky natives who are of Samoan descent. During World War II, a Japanese invasion of Tuvalu was imminent until the Allied forces decimated the Japanese at the Battle of Midway and allowed the Tuvaluans to remain a British colony. Tuvalu gained its independence in 1976 and became the 189th member of the United Nations in 2000.
