This Proof Gold 50 Euro coin, which is made of .920 Gold, is part of the “From Clovis to the Republic – 1,500 Years of French History” series. This series debuted in 2011 and pays tribute to key French sovereigns who most affected the French nation’s history. This is the seventh issue of this series and the first for 2013. Louis XI known as Louis the Prudent, strengthened the royal authority during his reign from 1461 to 1483. He was known for founding the French postal system. The obverse displays the profile of Louis XI wearing his well-known hat decorated with religious medals. The reverse of the coin represents one of the infamous cages used in the reign of Louis XI. There known as fillettes (little girls) because of their small height which prevented the prisoner inside from standing up. Each of these beautiful Gold coins comes in a box and with a certificate of authenticity.
