The $500 denomination was first released as a Legal Tender issue during the Civil War. After the conversion to small size notes in 1928, $500's were released that first year, and were redeemable in gold until 1933. The obverse of this 1928-series bill features President William McKinley on the obverse and the words “Five Hundred Dollars” on the reverse. Series 1928 $500 Federal Reserve Notes for the Minneapolis-district had a printing of just 34,680!
