BYZANTINE Gold Tremissis of Leo I who reigned from 457 - 474 AD (16mm - 1.5g) This coin of the Eastern Roman Empire (aka Byzantine Empire) was equal to one-third of a Gold Solidus. Leo I was also known as Leo the Thracian after the province where he was born. He was a capable leader who ruled the empire for almost 20 years. Leo also lived a lot longer than most of his contemporaries. At a time when most adult males were lucky to live into their 30's, Leo lived to the ripe old age of 73!
