The history of the Year of the Horse Silver coin

The Year of the Horse Silver coin celebrates the horse’s place in the Chinese ancient lunar calendar, as well as the horse’s connection to Chinese culture. The Lunar Silver coins, like the lunar calendar, record the finishing place of each zodiacal animal in a mythical race, where the horse was startled by the snake and finished seventh. The image on these collectible Silver Lunar coins shows the strength and beauty in horses, consistent with the history of an animal that is closely linked to China’s military might. In addition, the horses on these Silver bullion coins also honor the connection to the Chinese landscape because of their domestication there thousands of years ago.

Why invest in the Year of the Horse Silver coin?

The Year of the Horse Silver coin selections from world mints provide collectors with the opportunity to build a large Year of the Horse world coin collection. Before producing these Lunar Silver coins, the Perth Mint produced Silver Year of the Horse coins in 2002 with different images. Other collectible Silver Lunar coins have been struck by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2002 and 2014, changing the artwork between the years. In addition to Silver bullion coins, many of the world mints also offer Gold or colorized Year of the Horse coins, including the Royal Canadian Mint, the Perth Mint and the New Zealand Mint, giving collectors a world-class selection of Year of the Horse coins with different styles and effects.

Expand your Year of the Horse Silver coin collection with 2014 coins featuring horse privy marks.

Year of the Horse Silver coin collectors have a great opportunity to expand their world coin collections with 2014 coins that feature horse privy marks. In addition to their Lunar Silver coins, the Perth Mint’s 2014 Silver Kookaburra Horse privy coins feature the small image of a horse celebrating the Year of the Horse. Other strong companion coins to these collectible Silver Lunar coins, are the Silver Maple Leaf Horse privy coins from the Royal Canadian Mint, which feature a horse privy mark as well. In addition, the Royal Mint’s Silver bullion coins, the 2014 Silver Britannia coins with Horse privy marks, are ideal additions for both a world coin collection and a Year of the Horse coin collection.

So much detail and collectibility in the 1 oz size

Snagged a couple of these when they were still available. I'd noticed that the Silver Horse series maintained a very strong premium even when silver fell like it did (from $16.50 to the mid-$14s). My kilo especially remained considerably above what I paid for it ($617). I paid $45 apiece for these. If I had the disposable income I'd grab up a ton of lunars every year, though the Silver Horse seems proportionally stronger than the other lunar series.

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Mint Condition

After purchasing the 2015 Lunar year of the Goat I fell in love with the rest of the Lunar Series 2 coins. The year of the Horse is one of my favorite designs due to the amazing detail of the coin. The two horses depicted on this coin reflect the quality that the Perth Mint produces year in and year out. As far as customer service APMEX is always going above and beyond all standards to deliver the true quality which reflects upon their well known name in the industry.

This 2014 Year of the Horse Silver coin featuring the stoic image of horses is just one of the several must-have coins for any horse loving coin collector. With their own collectible Silver Lunar coins, the Royal Canadian Mint also produced both 2014 Gold Year of the Horse coins and Canadian Horse coins from its Wildlife Themed Commemoratives Series.
