The 2013 Maori Art: Koru Coin is the third coin in New Zealand Post’s Maori Art Coin series. Also included in the series is the fantastic Maori Art: Papatuanuku and the Maori Art: Hei Matau with Pounamu Stone.
The Koru, a symbol used to represent creation in Maori art, is founded on the form of an unrolling fern leaf. Its circular shape is suggestive of eternal movement with an eventual reversion to the original point. In essence, the Koru represents the phenomenon of an ever-changing life that manages to somehow remain the same in many regards.
Then is depicted through a series of Koru patterns and is watching over his domain - in which countless piko will grow into established ferns. The intricate design features the Koru and rauponga beautifully engraved with three-dimensional relief, giving the coins incredible depth and dimension. The depiction of The Mahuta contains striking contrasts between the frosted Koru and the polished background - resulting in visually powerful coins that are not to be missed. The coin is housed within a container featuring a specially designed mangopare (hammerhead shark) pattern and it makes for a memorable gift.
