This Gold Stater of Macedonia was struck sometime during the reign of Alexander III, more commonly known as Alexander the Great, king of Macedonia from 336-323 BC. Born in Macedon (modern day Greece) in 356 BC to parents Philip II, king of Macedonia and Olypias, Alexander was tutored by the Greek philosopher Aristotle until the age of 16. When his father was assassinated Alexander, aged 20 inherited a strong kingdom and an experienced army. By the time he was 30 he created one of the largest empires of the ancient world.
