Britannia is so closely linked with Britain’s coins – she first appeared as a representation of Britain in female form on the coins of Emperor Hadrian almost 2,000 years ago. And since 1672, when she was recalled to the coinage by Charles II, she has appeared on the coins of every British monarch.
In 1987, the Britannia coin was launched and 26 years later, Britannia begins a new chapter. Starting in 2013, bullion coins will always carry the original ‘standing Britannia’ reverse design by Philip Nathan. The Proof coins will become even more desirable for collectors: each year the Proof coins will feature a new portrait of Britannia by a leading British artist, struck in purer Gold and Silver. New denominations have been added, including a delicate 1/20 oz. 2013 is the ideal year to begin a collection of Britannia coins, or to refresh an existing one.
To begin the new series, the 2013 Britannia artist, portrait sculptor Robert Hunt, has created a classic Britannia that reflects the ancient Britannia designs and the familiar 50p. The only genuine Britannia coins come only from The Royal Mint – Britannia is protected by trademark. All coins are limited editions, confirmed by a certificate of authenticity, and are attractively presented with a very clear and appropriate British feel. Each issue comes complete with a booklet exploring Britannia’s history as the changing face of Britain. Check out the 2013 1 oz Silver Proof Britannia (w/Box & CoA) in original Royal Mint Packaging!
