The Royal Mint has launched a series of Lunar coins that lend a unique British angle to an ancient tradition. The 2014 Lunar Year of Horse coin is the perfect way to continue the Lunar New Year gifting tradition that brings good fortune to the recipient. The 1 oz Silver Lunar Year of the Horse coins, in Brilliant Uncirulated condition, are a first for The Royal Mint – the first legal tender Lunar coins struck for the United Kingdom – and they begin a wonderful new series: the Shengxiào Collection, named in honor of the Chinese zodiac.

The coins feature a dynamic galloping horse design, along with the year of issue, weight and purity. The stunning design was produced by British Chinese artist and printmaker, Wuon-Gean Ho.

If you are familiar with the 2013 and 2014 Britannia's, the features are the same. I ordered 5 coins and they are not anywhere near the quality of the perfectly executed Perth Mint Lunar Series.

At least it's the first of the series and who knows if it will go up in value. There's too many Mints producing lunar series coins these days.

Wow! From a Great country that has a deep equestrian history and an endless portfolio of great artists and art given to the world and a proud People you would think they could have come up with something a bit more interesting and impressive than this! Looks like the 5th grade drawing contest winner. Must be a good story behind that design!

Comments about 2014 Great Britain 1 oz Silver Year of the Horse BU:

My coin didn't have the dreaded milk spots, but it arrived scratched and scuffed. The scuffing is on both the field and the relief, so it's clearly not just from coins rubbing together in a tube. It looks like someone handled it very roughly and with bare hands. I bought this as a gift for my goddaughter. Unfortunately, it is most definitely not in giftable condition. Coincidentally, both the other brand new coins in this order were also damaged. I don't know what APMEX is playing at here, but this is not the first time I've received coins from them that were in questionable condition. It's just the first time I've been furious enough to return them.

        Service and delivery comments:

I have complained to APMEX about their packaging before, but to no avail. Because this was a small order, it arrived in a flat white box. The box was superglued to the point that I literally had to hurt myself and break my nails to get it open or use a tool that risks damaging the coins inside (not that that would have mattered since APMEX sent me damaged coins to begin with). I could open the end flap, but the bubble envelope containing the coins was superglued to the inside of the box. APMEX used to wrap their packages in tape. I guess they decided superglue was cheaper. They now use enough of it to glue an elephant to a ceiling. I don't know if APMEX doesn't trust the postal service or they just think it's cheaper to superglue things to the box than to add packing materials. Either way, making the customer angry before he even gets the package open is not a good idea.

I bought 20 of the new Great Britain Lunar Horses assuming it would be a mint roll, upon reciept the coins were flipped over and two had milk spots indicating this roll was searched for high grade coins, I guess they do this will all their coins.

Comments about 2014 Great Britain 1 oz Silver Year of the Horse BU:

Most people that haven't looked at why this is designed this way. In the background is the famous Uffington-White Horse which is significant. The figure presumably dates to "the later prehistory", i.e. the Iron Age (800 BC–AD 100) or the late Bronze Age (1000–700 BC). This view was generally held by scholars even before the 1990s, based on the similarity of the horse's design to comparable figures in Celtic art, and it was confirmed following a 1990 excavation led by Simon Palmer and David Miles of the Oxford Archaeological Unit, following which deposits of fine silt removed from the horse's 'beak' were scientifically dated to the late Bronze Age. Minted in 999.9 Fine Silver, it's was a definite buy for me. This is a first Lunar calendar mintage for the Royal Mint.

I purchased this coin because it was a new 2014 issue from the Royal Mint and it celebrated the Year of the Horse. The design is very beautiful and would have been better if there was some luster contrast. Nevertheless, it makes a good addition to any collection.

Great chance to purchase an inaugural issue. Looking forward to this first issue to be a key coin to own. Hope the engraver/ designer can work on making a more appealing image with subsequent years. This horse artwork is unremarkable.
