Tough one year type coin! One of the finest known!
South Africa issued a 1/2 Pound gold coin with a likeness of King George VI only in 1952, the year of his death. This coin is rarely offered for sale. With mintages of just 4,000 Mint State examples and 12,000 Proofs, it's easy to see why! These are much harder to find than the 1 Rand coins that replaced them in 1961. Each coin contains .1177 oz. of Gold.
A bust of George VI appears on the obverse, while a Springbok gazelle appears on the reverse. This specimen has been graded Proof 67 by NGC. There is only one graded higher in their census! Listed in Krause as KM#42.
