Product Description

Gold Byzantine Solidus in Mint State condition!
This Gold Solidus was issued by the Byzantine Empire which formed out of the eastern half of the Roman Empire after the latters collapse. The name was derived from its capital city Byzantium, which later became Constantinople (modern day Istanbul). This coin was struck during the joint reign of the Emperors Constans II and Constantine IV (A.D. 654-668). Constans II, who was also known as Contantine the Bearded, was Byzantine Emperor from 641-668. He became consul in 642, which made him the last Roman emperor to become consul. Constans II reigned jointly with his son Constantine IV from 654-668, and this coin was issued during that time.

The obverse shows a fully bearded Constans at left, with Constantine next to him. The reverse features a cross potent atop three steps. Two phrases are also shown on the reverse: "CONOB" which is an abbreviation of the Greek for "Byzantine coinage," and "VICTORIA AVGY."

The coins in this listing will each weigh approx. 4.3 grams. Each example has been certified Mint State by NGC.
