The obverse of each coin features the right-facing profile of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The design on the reverse design changes annually, but always features various domestic cat breeds. The first issue of the coin featured the Manx, a tailless cat native to the Isle of Man. This breed is the only one to be featured on the coin twice: first in 1988, the year the series began, and again in 2012. As of March 2017, the Pobjoy Mint will no longer produce the Isle of Man Cat Series. A final coin will be released to bring the series to a close with a total of 30 coins.
Founded by the Pobjoy family in 1965, the Pobjoy Mint is known for its innovation in coin production. With more than 300 years of experience handcrafting medals, objet d’art and jewelry, the Pobjoy Mint is one of the world’s foremost leaders of specialty coins. Located in Kingswood in County Surrey, outside London, the mint is at the center of a bustling economic and cultural hub. The largest private mint in Europe, the Pobjoy Mint produces sovereign coins for nearly 20 percent of the world’s governments and central banks. The Pobjoy Mint constantly challenges convention in order to bring the world a litany of firsts including the first braille coin, the first hologram coin, the first spinning coin and the first diamond-shaped coin, to name a few. They also produced the world’s highest relief coin and developed the world’s first man-made Precious Metal, Virenium.
