The Great Smoky Mountains 5 oz Silver America the Beautiful .999 fine Silver coin is the 1st coin of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program released by the U.S. Mint in 2014 and the 21st coin overall in the series!

The Great Smoky Mountains are a sub range of the Appalachian Mountains formed between 200 and 400 million years ago which cover 522,419 acres of land spanning two States, Tennessee and North Carolina. The National Park itself, established in 1934,and dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, sees over 9 million visitors per year and is the most visited park in the United States and its territories. The term “Smoky” comes from the naturally occurring fog that drapes over the mountains as though it was a large plume of smoke. The fog is produced by the naturally exhaling vegetation which has a higher than average vapor pressure for normal temperatures. The Great Smoky Mountains are home to the largest black bear population east of the Mississippi River and the largest variety of salamanders in the continental U.S.

The Smoky Mountains has even made its way into pop culture with Ronnie Milsap’s recording of “Smoky Mountain Rain” becoming a #1 Country hit in 1980. Additionally, the “Smokies,” as they are affectionately called, were also one of the sites used to film the 1950s hit TV series ‘Davy Crockett.‘ The coin itself features a log cabin in the woods with an eagle flying above. The mountain line can be seen in the background.

Individual coins will come in capsules. Multiples of 10 will be delivered in mint-issued tubes without capsules. Orders of 100 come in mint-issued monster boxes also without capsules.

I see these 5 oz. silver coins as "hybrids", bullion items with a numismatic appeal. I like them because they allow me to enjoy the ownership of silver with the appeal of a collectible. This Smokey Mountain coin is one of my favorite designs thus far and it is easier for me to see the beauty of it better on a large format coin. In my opinion the mint should not have had "Quarter Dollar" as part of the inscription. This is illogical because these items will never trade as a quarter.

I have been buying from APMEX for 8 years. This was the first time that I bought a new US mint bullion product with fingerprints on the coin, and the grade was also lower than ususal. So, the coins were handled poorly by either the US Mint, or APMEX. Judging by the fact that they are also selling certified-graded ATB coins, I also suspect that they are cherry picking the high grade coins, and selling the lower grade coins raw, after fondling them without gloves. I sent the coin back to APMEX, and they sent me another similar grade coin without fingerprints.

This is a great coin, but not top notch. Maybe I'm used to seeing proof strikes. Its a beautiful coin design, I just wish it stood out more. I would suggest it to someone looking for a decently priced 5 oz, America the Beautiful coin.

Service and product were excellent. Feel comfortable with the APMEX by back program.

This was the first national parks round I ordered from APMEX and I am very impressed with all the detail. Its another way to collect silver and have something interesting to observe from time to time.

The delivery that APMEX provides is exceptional.I ordered another similar round from a different company and they did not provide the airtight case and shipped it in a plastic bag.APMEX shipped this enclosed in the airtight case (no charge). The delivery time is on average 6-7 days faster than other competetors but you will need this time to open the extremely secure carton.
