The history of 1 oz Gold Maple Leafs

1 oz Gold Maple Leafs have undergone a few changes since their first minting in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint. At that time, the Canadian coins were only .999 fine Gold, but now the Gold coins are .9999 fine Gold. The Gold coins’ iconic design has largely remained unchanged since the Canadian coins’ inception; however, small security measures have been introduced over time to help confirm the authenticity of these Gold coins. Most recently, the Royal Canadian Mint has replaced the shiny, smooth background of these Gold coins with a radial line finish that diffracts light.

Why invest in 1 oz Gold Maple Leafs?

1 oz Gold Maple Leafs are one of the bestselling Gold bullion coins in the world, and for good reason. The .9999 fine Gold content makes these Canadian coins more desirable to investors than Gold coins with less fineness. Also, the Royal Canadian Mint sells these 1 oz Gold coins for closer to the Gold spot price than smaller, fractional coins which entail a higher markup over spot price per troy ounce. These Gold coins are usually priced lower than their American counterparts, American Gold Eagles, and this can sometimes create a larger demand for Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coins.

Figuring out when to buy 1 oz Gold Maple Leafs does not have to be complicated.

Knowing when to invest in 1 oz Gold Maple Leafs does not need to be tricky. Many hold Canadian coins for more than three years, and then the current price of Gold becomes less important than its historical performance when compared with other investments. Though the price of Gold may fluctuate, it is not generally subject to the ups and downs of the stock market. Gold coins can add balance to your portfolio, and the best time to buy Gold coins is when you have identified your goals and budget.

Bought 2 coins, received a 2011 and 2013. The 2013 had a small nick in it. If this happens to you, please don't hesitate to contact customer service. They emailed me postage paid sticker for sending my nicked coin back and I received a brand new 2015 in return. Took about 2 weeks to return and receive new coin though, most of that I suspect is due to the USPS. I know I can find these cheaper on other websites, but few dealers have the exceptional return/exchange policy that APMEX does. Worth the extra dollars in my opinion. In other news, I think for the premium above spot, the PERTH mint coins are better looking, more unique (design changes) and come encapsulated.

Pros

  • Recognized Brand
  • Mint Condition
  • Attractive Design

One of the coins was beautiful, the other badly scratched. I dont buy for the looks but it would be nice to have something that was not so scratched up. a little disappointing. that said, delivery was flawless as usual and it is gold!!!!

I will take quite a hit later to sell these to anyone, including back to APMEX. DO NOT PURCHASE! There is no mention in the description that random year coins will be any less than brilliant and uncirculated, but my 3 out of 3 are.

Cons

  • Spots And Damage

This was my first coin purchase from APMEX. The coin had a small strawberry spot on front and back sides of the coin. Since it was random year and not "with abrasions", I returned it for a replacement. Customer service was excellent and I got a replacement no questions asked. The replacement was in very good condition. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Discover 1 oz Gold Maple Leafs that feature three different portraits of Queen Elizabeth II.

The 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf design reflects Canada’s strong ties to the English monarchy. Over time, these Canadian coins have depicted Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at three different ages: 39, 64 and 79 years old. Currently, the Gold coins feature her portrait at age 79, designed by acclaimed Canadian artist, Susanna Blunt. This version of the Royal Canadian Mint Gold coin presents a more casual depiction of the Queen by portraying her without a crown.
