2019 Una and The Lion Coin Recreates Epic English Literature

2019 Silver una and the lion

The latest releases from the Pobjoy Mint recreate a legendary coin with a story dated back to 1590. The 2019 Una and The Lion coin continues the popular depiction of British Royalty as Lady Una with her loyal lion and is available now at APMEX.

In 1590, English author Edmund Spenser published his most famous epic poem, The Faerie Queene. In Book I, Una is depicted as a beautiful princess who sets off to save her family trapped in their castle by an angry dragon. On her journey to find a noble knight to rescue her family, Una encounters evil tricks, love and loss. Throughout her tough circumstances, she continues to be gracious and graceful. Lady Una’s quality features inspired coin designer William Wyon in 1839 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s reign.

The obverse of the 2019 recreation features the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse depicts today’s queen of Great Britain as Lady Una. The Queen holds her a scepter in her right hand and a globus cruciger (cross-bearing orb) in her left while walking alongside her protective and loyal lion. The Latin phrase “Dieu et mon droit,” translated as "God and my right,” is the motto of the monarch of Great Britain and is on either side of the Queen. Roman numerals MMXIX representing 2019 are featured below the central image.
