America The Beautiful Coins Celebrate Our Nation
Americans take immense pride in the varied landscapes of our country. From the frozen expanses of Alaska to the wetlands of the American Southeast, we celebrate the beauty of our nation. Whether you prefer the rocky shores of Maine or the seemingly endless Midwestern prairie, there is surely a spot right here in the U.S. that makes your heart soar. The America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ program honors the beauty of America’s National Parks and the history that created them.
The America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ series is projected to comprise 56 Silver bullion coins with a face value of a quarter dollar. Each coin features a design of a National Park or National Site from one of the 50 states, five U.S. territories and Washington D.C. The artwork on each coin replicates that on one of the circulating America the Beautiful Quarters, enlarged for detail. The series began in 2010 and is planned for each year until 2021. The coins contain five ounces of .999 Silver, which makes them the largest Silver bullion coins ever issued by the United States Mint!
One recent issue, the 2017 5 oz Silver America the Beautiful Ozark National Scenic Riverways, MO, bears an image of Alley Mill, a steel roller mill built in 1894. This merchant mill was used to mill wheat into flour. A great deal of the original milling equipment is still in place and visitors to the park can tour this beautiful historic mill. The detail on this large coin brings the mill almost to life. The cool valley and the rushing water are so finely rendered as to transport a person holding this stunning coin straight to the Ozarks. The obverse of this coin, like every coin in the series, features the iconic John Flanagan portrait of George Washington, along with the words "United States of America", "Liberty", "In God We Trust" and "Quarter Dollar".
The America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ program honors the National Park System made possible by legislation championed by President Theodore Roosevelt, who established 18 national parks by the end of his time in office. This practice was continued by later presidents through the Antiquities Act until there were more than 100 national parks and monuments. Many of those have been reclassified and today there are 59 National Parks, with more than 350 other designated sites, including National Forests, National Rivers and National Monuments, among others. Theodore Roosevelt’s visage appears on Mount Rushmore in honor of his tireless efforts to create a National Park System that would preserve America's most valuable treasures for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
