Explore Saipan with the Newest America the Beautiful Release
For just the second time in the popular America the Beautiful Series, the designs ventures outside of the United States and visits the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands – specifically the island of Saipan.
While most Americans may not be familiar with this small island chain located in the western Pacific Ocean, it played an important role in American history. Saipan, the largest of the islands, was considered part of Japan's last line of defenses for their homeland during World War II. After a 24-day battle in the summer of 1944, the American military took control of Saipan, helping to neutralize Japanese bases in the central Pacific.
The loss of Saipan was a heavy blow to the Japanese military. This American victory, and the sacrifices of both the American military and local islanders, is honored through the living memorial that is popular with both locals and tourists alike.
Paying homage to the island’s sacrifices, the reverse of this beautiful .999 fine Silver coin from the U.S. Mint depicts a young Chamorro woman standing in front of the park's Court of Honor and Flag Circle. The obverse of the coin, like each release in the series, features the iconic John Flanagan portrait of George Washington, along with the words “United States of America”, “Liberty”, “In God We Trust” and “Quarter Dollar”.
The America the Beautiful Series launched in 2010 and will continue into 2021, with a total of 56 coins celebrating a national site from a U.S. state and territory. Each design is available as a circulating quarter, but collectors treasure these large 5 oz Silver bullion coins, which showcase the beautiful parks and sites in deeper detail.
