In 1995, U.S. Mint Director Phillip Diehl began working with legislators to create the Platinum Eagle with the assistance of American Numismatic Association President David Ganz and Platinum Guild International Executive Director Jacques Luben. This process took more than two years, and in 1997 the first-ever Platinum Eagle was minted. The Platinum American Eagle is a sovereign coin authorized by the United States Congress and backed by the United States Mint.
This .9995 fine Platinum coin carries one of the most recognizable, and surely most patriotic designs in all of U.S. coinage. The reverse displays a soaring bald eagle, which has long been the national bird of the United States. The obverse features a close-up image of the Statue of Liberty’s resolute face.
The Statue of Liberty is a copper statue gifted by the people of France to the United States in 1886. The statue stands at 305 feet and 1 inch from ground level to torch on Liberty Island in New York City. Among several phrases associated with the Statue of Liberty, the most recognizable is “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” This quote comes from Emma Lazarus’ sonnet, New Colossus, written on the pedestal upon which the Statue of Liberty now sits.
APMEX is also offering an exclusive black label available on PCGS-certified 2019 American Eagles, including the Platinum Eagles. This represents a strong partnership not only between APMEX and the U.S.
