The America the Beautiful Series Continues at APMEX
APMEX is excited to introduce the 2018 5 oz Silver ATB Cumberland Island National Seashore, GA from the U.S. Mint. This .999 fine Silver coin marks the fourth release of 2018 and 44th overall in the America the Beautiful series that captures the National Park System, established through legislation spearheaded by President Theodore Roosevelt.
The reverse of the coin pays homage to the island’s migratory waterfowl by depicting a snowy egret standing on a branch on the edge of a salt marsh. The obverse features the iconic John Flanagan portrait of George Washington, along with the words “United States of America”, “Liberty”, “In God We Trust” and “Quarter Dollar”.
Sitting off the southernmost edge of the Georgia coast, Cumberland Island National Seashore encompasses the largest of Georgia’s Golden Isles. The National Park Service, who manages the public areas of the park, restricts access to the island to 300 people at a time. At least 23 distinct ecological communities are found within the park, making it the largest and most biodiverse of Georgia's barrier islands.
The America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ program honors the National Park System made possible by legislation championed by President Theodore Roosevelt, who established 18 national parks by the end of his time in office. This practice was continued by later presidents through the Antiquities Act until there were more than 100 national parks and monuments. Many of those have been reclassified and today there are 59 National Parks, with more than 350 other designated sites, including National Forests, National Rivers and National Monuments, among others.
