The Latest Release in the Ever-Popular Chiwoo Series Has Arrived
In 2016, KOMSCO, the official mint of South Korea, broke into the Western market with a new Silver medal – the Chiwoo Cheonwang. Since that initial release, this series has created an almost cult-like following in the coin community. With the limited mintages, unique and intricate design, as well as the Gold medal and Gold and Proof Silver sets, it’s no wonder why both collectors and stackers alike are so crazy about this series.
We are excited to announce the newest releases from KOMSCO, the 2017 Gold and Proof Silver Chiwoo Cheonwang medals. The new design for 2017 still features the denomination of 1 clay as well as the shield of Chiwoo Cheonwang. These new additions to this series continue to pay homage to the popular figure in Chinese and Korean history.
The history of Chiwoo Cheonwang dates all the way back to 2600 B.C. in both Korean and Chinese culture. The real Chiwoo was a tribal leader of the Nine Li tribe in ancient China, whose leadership led him to being known as the God of War. Many of his deeds have also been transformed into mythological stories of magic and power. Chiwoo is also one of the three founding fathers of China.
The 2017 1 oz Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang contains .999 fine Gold and features the historical figure in traditional military dress with a spear and shield riding on a horse. The 1 oz Proof Silver medal depicts the same new reverse design. Both issues showcase the shield surrounded by the date, purity denomination and the country of issue – the Republic of Korea.
These latest additions to the crowd-pleasing series have limited mintages of 50,000 for the Proof Silver and just 2,017 for the Gold. You can shop these new releases, as well as the rest of the series, now on our site!
