The Royal Australian Mint Celebrates Singapore with their Latest Release

2019 Royal Australian Mint 1 oz Silver Kangaroos

The 2019 1 oz Silver Kangaroo coin features a tribute to Singapore with a Merlion Privy, the country’s official mascot. This special release from the Royal Australian Mint debuted at the Singapore Coin Fair in late March and is available now at APMEX.

Since 1993, the Royal Australian Mint has featured artistic depictions of Australia’s beloved kangaroo for their popular Kangaroo Series. The series is derived from the reverse of the 1937 Australian penny and has appeared in various forms and with various themes for more than 25 years. The 2019 release combines Australia’s iconic mascot with Singapore’s symbolic one.

The mythical merlion includes the body of a fish to represent Singapore’s history as a fishing village, when it was called Temasek (meaning “sea town”). The lion head represents the original name of Singapore, Singapura, meaning “lion city”. The merlion was officially trademarked by Singapore on July 20, 1966, and continues to represent the country in mainstream entertainment and souvenirs.

The obverse of the .999 fine Silver coin depicts a troop of kangaroos with a merlion privy mark right below the troop leader. The reverse features the Jody Clark likeness of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Each 2019 1 oz Silver Kangaroo coin comes in an individual capsule and has a limited mintage of 5,000 coins worldwide.
