The Gold Buffalo Coin's Historical Significance Brings Historical and Gold Value to Collection

The Gold Buffalo coin is designed after James Earle Fraser's famous 1913 Type-1 Buffalo Nickel. The obverse shows the well-known Indian Head design, created by combining the images of three Native American chiefs: Iron Tail (Lakota), Two Moons (Cheyenne) and John Big Tree (Seneca). The reverse features the classic buffalo design modeled after Black Diamond, the bison living in New York City's Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s, as well as inscriptions of the weight, denomination and Gold content. Fraser's unlimited creativity helped shape many of the iconic structures you see today across the country. Fraser's 1913 Buffalo Nickel was perhaps the most popular coinage to that era in history. The Gold Buffalo brings back the design with finer detail and glory. Its popularity came out on top at a time when American coinage was in need of quality designs.

Driving Beauty to American Coinage

The Gold Buffalo coins pay perfect homage to that coin that was endeared by so many people in 1913. The American Buffalo coin is a popular collector's item because of the famed designer, and the politics involved with the inception of his idea. Fraser was commissioned by the Taft administration to accomplish a wonderfully made design. Because an Act of Congress determined that coinage designs could not be changed until 25 years in circulation, the Buffalo Nickel did what other designs or artists could not do. Despite several objections, Treasury Secretary Franklin MacVeagh went forth with the production of the coin, replacing the Barber-designed Liberty Head nickel. The 1913 Buffalo Nickel was an instant success and it complemented Augustus Saint-Gaudens' eagle and double eagle designs that were in circulation for several years to that point. Fraser's coin was met with public and private success. The Buffalo Nickel had a full run of circulation from 1913 to 1938.

Theodore Roosevelt's push to bring beauty back to American coinage was accomplished with that design. The Buffalo Gold coins today mirror much of the same success the 1913 Buffalo Nickel had. The Buffalo coin pays tribute to Fraser and that era in coinage.
