Find the Double Eagle at APMEX

Collectors prize surviving Liberty Gold Double Eagle coins because in 1933, in response to the Great Depression, the U.S. government outlawed the holding of monetary Gold. Once-common Gold Double Eagle coins were turned in and melted down by the millions. The U.S. Mint has made modern American Eagle coins since 1986, but for lovers of history, the original circulating Gold Double Eagle is special.

The History of the Double Eagle Coin

Following the discovery of Gold in northern California, the California Gold Rush of 1849 sent a steady flow of Gold to the U.S. Mint. The Gold Double Eagle coin was created as a $20 coin that was worth “double” the existing $10 Eagle coin. The $20 Liberty Gold coin was minted from 1850 to 1907, when the Double Eagle Gold coin was redesigned at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1866, the U.S. Mint added the motto “In God We Trust” to the Gold Double Eagle coin, an essential subtype for collectors of the Liberty Gold Double Eagle and old Gold coins alike.

Popular Gold Liberty Coins

The Liberty Gold Double Eagle is one of the most popular American Gold coins among collectors, with 143 different issues, some of which are extremely rare and highly sought after. The Gold Double Eagle coin is distinctive for being the largest regular-issue U.S. coin in terms of both Gold value and denomination. Many investors value the Liberty Gold Double Eagle for its combination of Gold content and increasing rarity. With so many unique issues, collecting a full Liberty Gold coin set is a remarkable accomplishment. Additionally, many of these American Gold coins have been melted over the years for their Gold, adding to their rarity and numismatic value. The Double Eagle Gold coin is a spectacle for collectors of old Gold coins for sale.
