The South African Gold Krugerrand coin has historically used the design elements on both its obverse and reverse since the coin’s inception. The design’s only change was a modernization of the images used on either side in 1984.Designed by Otto Schultz, the obverse depicts Paul Kruger’s left-profile portrait surrounded by the Afrikaans term “Suid-Afrika” and the English translation of “South Africa.” Kruger was a political figure in the late 19th century and served as President of the South African Republic. The name “Krugerrand” is a combination of the South African currency, the Rand, and Kruger’s name. Designed by Coert Steynberg, the reverse includes the image of a Springbok antelope, the official symbol of the modern Republic of South Africa.
