Lincoln Memorial Pennies (1959 - 2008) (Certified)
Lincoln Memorial Pennies - On December 21, 1958, President Eisenhower’s administration issued an important press release announcing that a new reverse design for the Lincoln cent would begin production on January 2, 1959. This announcement came as a complete shock to the numismatic community and to the American public. The design would feature the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. It was designed by Frank Gasparro, who was an Assistant Engraver at the U.S. Mint.
Gasparro’s design was chosen from 23 other designs prepared by the Mint’s Engraving Staff and had the full support of the Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission. Although it went through several modifications, the original design had the words “LINCOLN MEMORIAL” on it as well as having been surrounded by 13 stars. The final product released on February 12, 1959 retained most of Gasparro’s initial elements. One element made it unique among all U.S. coins. There is a small representation of a seated Abraham Lincoln in the very center of the design, so small that most people have never noticed it. That made it the very first United States coin to depict the same person on both sides of the coin.
Although the U.S. Mint was forced to change the composition of the cent from a copper alloy (1959 to 1982) to Copper Plated Zinc (1982-2008) due to the ever-changing price of copper, the design remained unchanged.
The Lincoln Memorial cent reverse was minted until 2008. The U.S. Mint wanted to change the Lincoln Memorial design in 2009 to honor the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln and created 4 separate reverse designs displaying the different major aspects of Abraham Lincoln’s life. This brought an end to the Lincoln Memorial cent reverse but by the time the series had ended more than 150 billion Lincoln Memorial Pennies had been minted.
