However, while the obverse has remained the same since the introduction of the coins, the reverse changes each year. In fact, Proof Platinum Eagles are the only U.S. bullion coins that have a reverse with a yearly changing design.
From 1998 to 2002, the reverse of the proof versions of the Platinum American Eagle featured designs that were part of a program called "Vistas of Liberty." In this series, the reverse designs featured a bald eagle in various regions of the United States. From 2006 to 2008, designs from a new series called "The Foundations of Democracy" graced the reverse of the Proof Platinum American Eagles. The designs in this series paid tribute to the three branches of American government. Beginning in 2009, the Platinum coins began to feature designs from a series showcasing the concepts of democracy and the Preamble to the United States Constitution.
