The Liberty Seated Silver Dollar was designed by Christian Gobrecht, and was first minted in 1840. The Liberty Silver Dollars series continued until 1873, when the Silver coins were replaced by the Trade Dollar. The Silver dollar obverse features a Seated Liberty surrounded by 13 stars adorning the Silver coin’s edge, representing the original states in the Union. The reverse depicts a resplendent eagle with wings spread. The eagle grips in its talons an olive branch and a cluster of arrows, symbolic of war and peace. This magnificent Liberty Dollar series is truly a great collectible.
Liberty Seated Dollar Coins
The Seated Liberty Dollar obverse design is based on the Gobrecht Dollar, which had been experimentally minted 1836-1839, while the reverse was inspired by an Eagle design first used on coins in 1807 and done by the late U.S. mint engraver, John Reich. Production of these American Silver dollars, for much of their run, remained low thanks to hoarding of Silver brought on by higher Silver prices compared with Gold, which was in high supply as the California Gold Rush raged on. The Seated Liberty Silver Dollars were primarily minted in Philadelphia. Today the Liberty Silver Dollars are highly desired and valuable coins for collectors, with fewer than 7 million minted.
