Washington Quarter Dollars (1932 - 1998) - Originally created in 1932 to commemorate the birthday of America’s first president, Washington Quarters were intended to be a commemorative issue and not a regular issue coin. The U.S. government held a public contest to select the one-year coin design.
History of Washington Quarter Dollar Coins
Many felt the design by Laura Gardin Fraser, an accomplished sculptor and wife of the designer of the Buffalo Nickel, James E. Fraser, would have been the best choice. However, much resistance was met, likely because she was a woman. The honor was given to John Flanagan, a former student of the famous sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, as his traditional design was selected.
